Identifying sources of resistance in chickpea to seed rot and seedling damping‐off caused by metalaxyl‐resistant <i>Pythium ultimum</i>

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) has been a globally important source of nutrition for human and animal diets several thousand years. In the United States, chickpeas are integral components dryland agriculture systems throughout Pacific Northwest Northern Plains, but seed rot preemergent damping-off chickpea caused by metalaxyl-resistant isolates Pythium ultimum Trow have emerged as diseases increasing importance in U.S. Northwest. The objective this study was to identify sources resistance P. chickpea. Resistance evaluated based on emergence seedlings from soil artificially infested with pathogen. Significant differences were consistently detected between desi cultivar ‘Myles’ kabuli ‘Sierra’. These two cultivars used checks screen different mini-core collections, including 39-accession collection National Plant Germplasm System 209 accessions developed International Crops Research Institute Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT). A total 194 41 significantly more resistant than Sierra, whereas 85 identified ICRISAT highly both isolates. Accessions pigmented coats beige coats, which is characteristic chickpeas. Two accessions, W6 25882 25884, may be especially promising parental materials improving their consistent reactions higher 100-seed weight.
